Calm Costs $70/Year for Sleep Stories—Morph Offers Unlimited Reading
Calm's sleep stories are limited. Morph gives you unlimited books, narrated with sleep voices, curated for wind-down reading.
What this is about
Calm charges $70/year for sleep content. Morph is $7.99/month (less per year) for unlimited reading + sleep-voice TTS narration. Every book becomes a sleep story.
Calm users who use sleep stories to wind down but want more variety. People with insomnia who benefit from reading to calm racing thoughts. Bedtime readers.
What you’ll learn
- · Export your Calm content (if downloadable) and see what transfers
- · Import ebooks into Morph optimized for bedtime reading
- · Enable sleep voices (slower, lower-pitch TTS for relaxation)
- · Create a bedtime reading routine in Morph (cloud-synced across devices)
- · Use reading streaks to build consistent sleep-time habits
The playbook
- 1
Back Up Your Calm Content
Open Calm app → Settings → Account → Download Your Data. Calm emails you exported content (mostly metadata, not downloadable sleep stories—Calm's stories are app-only). Note any you love.
- 2
Note Which Sleep Stories You Listen To
Scroll through Calm's Sleep Stories. Screenshot titles and descriptions of your favorites (e.g., 'The Great Gatsby', specific narrators). You'll hunt for audio or text versions in step 3.
- 3
Find Sleep Story Equivalents in Text Form
Most Calm sleep stories are classics or literary fiction. Search Project Gutenberg (gutenberg.org) for text versions. Example: Calm has 'The Great Gatsby'—find EPUB on Gutenberg. For original Calm content, no EPUB exists; use audiobook alternatives instead.
- 4
Download EPUBs and Import into Morph
For each classic sleep story: Download EPUB from Gutenberg. Open Morph app → Library → '+' → 'Import from Files'. Select EPUBs. They appear in your library synced to cloud.
- 5
Enable Sleep-Mode TTS Voice
Open a book in Morph → Speaker icon → Select TTS voice → Scroll to 'Sleep Voices' (slower, lower pitch, calming). Adjust speed (0.5x–0.75x for extra relaxation). Test the first 5 minutes.
- 6
Toggle Synced Read-and-Listen for Bedtime
Open book → 'Read + Listen' ON. Tap text to advance, or let TTS auto-scroll. Reading + listening keeps your mind focused on the story (not racing thoughts). Synced mode helps you fall asleep faster than listen-only.
- 7
Create a 'Bedtime Reading' List
In Morph → Reading Lists → Create 'Bedtime Reading'. Add your sleep stories to this list. Every night, open this list and pick a book. Habit stacking: bedtime → Morph → book. Makes it automatic.
- 8
Download for Offline Bedtime Reading
Open Morph → Library → Select a bedtime book → Download (cloud icon). TTS narration caches. Read offline without WiFi or airplane mode engagement disrupting sleep.
- 9
Use Calm's 'Meditate' Content Separately if Needed
Calm's meditations are separate from sleep stories—Morph doesn't replace those. For meditation, keep Calm or find Meditation Studio, Headspace, or free alternatives. Morph replaces sleep story/reading portion only.

Cancel Calm Subscription
Open Calm app → Settings → Subscription → 'Cancel Subscription' → Confirm. On iOS: Settings → Subscriptions → Calm → Cancel. You lose access after your billing date.
Common mistakes
✗Expecting Calm's original sleep stories (with celebrity narrators) to appear in Morph
→Calm's exclusive content doesn't exist elsewhere. Only Calm has Matthew McConaughey narrating. Use Morph for classic literature + TTS instead—different but equally effective.
✗Not testing sleep voice speed before bed—rushing through narration
→Calm's sleep stories are slower (~0.5x speed). Set Morph to 0.5x–0.75x for bedtime. Fast narration defeats the sleep purpose.
✗Forgetting to download books for offline use—WiFi dropout kills sleep
→Download every bedtime book to your device. Offline means uninterrupted sleep, no data connection interruptions.
✗Using reading streaks as a 'must read every night' obligation
→Streaks are motivational, not mandatory. Missing a night is fine—jump back in tomorrow. Sleep quality > streak count.
✗Trying to replace Calm's meditations with Morph reading (they serve different purposes)
→Morph is reading/listening. Calm's meditations guide breathing and relaxation—different tools. Use Morph for sleep stories, Calm or Insight Timer for meditation.

Why Morph Beats Calm for Bedtime Reading
Calm limits sleep stories and charges $70/year. Morph offers unlimited reading with sleep-voice TTS at a lower cost. Sleep voices are slower, lower-pitched, and optimized for relaxation. Synced read-and-listen keeps your mind on the story instead of anxious thoughts—a cognitive trick sleep experts call 'attention anchoring.' Download for offline reading (no WiFi dropouts). Cloud sync means your bedtime book follows you everywhere. Unlike Calm (meditation + stories), Morph focuses on reading—pure, simple, effective.
